Anxiety is the body’s natural response to danger, an automatic alarm that goes off when you feel threatened, under pressure, or are facing a stressful situation. It’s called ‘The Fight or Flight Response’, preparing us to fight, freeze or to flee.

It’s interesting to know that Anxiety attacks usually peak within ten minutes, and they rarely last more than thirty minutes. However, during that short time, the terror can be so severe that you feel as if you’re about to die or totally lose control.

Fear is an emotion that is experienced when we are actually in a dangerous situation, whereas anxiety is an emotion that occurs when we expect or anticipate that something unpleasant may happen.

For some people anxiety can become excessive. They have difficulty controlling it as they do not understand the mechanisms behind their fear.

What actually happens when people do anxiety and panic attacks?

Just like depression, anxiety is a normal response of the mind body mechanism. Anxiety is actually trying to keep you safe but of course when you have anxiety or a panic attack you surely don’t feel safe at all. Anxiety and panic attacks are basically the old fight or flight response causing adrenaline to rush through your system, pumping blood away from the brain and into your limbs and so on. An anxiety response you probably know all to well and have come to the right place to get rid off for good. Anxiety is originally designed as a response to keep you safe. Hence when you're standing in the middle of the road and a truck comes towards you at 100kph you'd want to get a bit of an adrenaline rush to spur you into action to get away from a real threat... Hence you won't be able to get rid of anxiety completely but in all those situations where there is no real threat, anxiety has become this overwhelming, annoying, very useless response that has stopped you for too long from doing what you want to do. That's the one to get rid off now...

Phobias vs Anxiety vs Panic Attack

A phobia is different to anxiety. Anxiety is a more general feeling of something being not quiet right, a general sense of unease. Anxiety might be triggered by certain situations, people, events etc or it can be more generalised scenario where the person doesn't even know what causes them to be anxious. Generalised anxiety is a bit like a faulty smoke alarm that starts beeping many many times during the day and / or night for no apparent reason... 

Phobias are different. Someone with a 'proper' phobia normally feels completely safe in life. It's just that every time they see that thing whether in reality or on TV or in a newspaper they get that phobic response... But other than reacting to that one thing they don't feel anxious with regards to anything else. 

At the end of the day the phobic response is an unconscious response too. The person with, let's say a snake phobia, probably knows that screaming hysterically and rolling around on the floor is probably not the safest response to have in the presence of a snake. But that doesn't help, does it? Hence again we need to assist the unconscious in learning a new response, one that is more suitable to the situation. Like calmly move away from the situation, make sure the kids and loved ones are safe, pick up the phone and call for help... Real change is about having real choices.

No exposure therapy

It is important for you to know that I don't have a little zoo in my drawers... All we work with is your mind. Exposure therapy in my honest opinion is cruel and besides research shows that it only gets very limited results. However NLP processes combined with Hypnosis and other mind training tools and techniques gets lasting results relatively quickly.
